From the earliest chapter, readers have been hinted about the impending doom of the country.
With the mysterious lady and the mysterious wolf appearance, I think this story is all about surviving the war, it's just that the progress is slow, and we sometimes forget about it due to how slow it is.

Meanwhile the romance, is just a sub plot for the story. Think of it as a fuel for the reader.

This chapter reminds me when I'm playing Troll Jungle Survival (IIRC) custom game in wc3.
