This is one of the most impressive manga I've ever read. One of the only manga where every single thing has a consequence. Every character is fleshed out and relevant. Every event serves a purpose. Something that happened in chapter 5 that in many manga would serve only as meaningless shock value is mentioned in the last chapter and serves as motivation for many choices. The death of a side character that we only see for like 5 chapters, something that usually would feel like death fodder fridging, is the main catalyst for one of the longest subplots. The first thing that happens in this manga is mentioned 80 chapters later. The wimpy villain of the week from chapter 3 ends up saving several characters 95 chapters later. It's a marvel in storytelling and absolutely deserves its GOAT status.

This is one of the few manga where there's not a single low point. It's completely filled with plot twists, insane mind games and amazing action. There's not a single unimportant character or event.

Makes a lot of sense. If their bodies are "human" there's still the underlying knowledge that they're fundamentally not human.
I imagine it's comparable to being an adopted child. Even in a loving home there's often still a sense of not belonging.

Also the military doesn't allow them to connect with their family and they probably treat them like weapons, so that doesn't help either

Why is Lust doing this? It could be for information or just to get close to the bigger conflict. But for the first one, considering that she's the girlfriend of that one guy, he's not just gonna give out classified information like that. And for the second option, they've been going out for only a few days at least, right? So if it came down to it, that guy would obviously choose the military (or Roy Mustang's side, more accurately) if he found out that his new gf is against them. I don't really see the significance.

Second is Oyasumi Punpun. Drama and coming of age, 147 chapter.
Third is Chi No Wadachi. Thriller and psychological horror-ish, 153 chapters.
Four is Grave of the Fireflies. War and drama, Ghibli movie.
Would absolutely recommend Punpun and Grave of the Fireflies, but both are heartbreaking on several levels. Chi No Wadachi is also great, but easily the worst of the 4, imo.
