from the clues we got, I'm pretty sure he was in love with FMC mother, especially when the grandpa was so scared of meeting the ecklen, maybe hinting that he did something that could not easily be forgiven by the ecklens(marrying his daughter to the lestern), and then FMC father also said "if you still have any pride that is" when the ecklen son visited them and the encounter with the ecklen father also hinted that he once was in love with FMC mother, all just speculation tho
