Why does Claire have a beard?

Her forming the contract is never on screen, even in the novel, but the novel does make it clear that she's spent a lot of time, over the course of weeks, stealing Ed's food, specifically jerky, and his little shelter for her naps. So while it's still a surprise it doesn't have the practicality nonexistent groundwork this version has.

Oh wow, they cut so much. This sucks. Where's the taming of Lucy with jerky? Where's the adorable scene of Ed fixing Lucy's outfit before sending her off to fight like a proud papa?
