You do make some interesting points. Although, I've come across a number of mangas that are set in the same time period and do make provision for self defence. The guilds even state that you are allowed to defend yourself when attacked. But it is true that the majority of them really don't like the MC killing people. They'll even go as far as to sacrifice everyone the MC knows and he still lets the bad guys off.

In this case though, the antagonist had no idea of the MCs strength. What if he was just and weakling and ends up dying because of a punch? Could've just asked what his ranking is or the groups ranking.

Does self defence exist in isekais? I've come across maybe 2 or 3 mangas where the MC retaliates and even kills the people who attack him. For the rest, the MC just threatens them or walks away even when attacked with the intent to kill.
