Well I assume that these businesses were fairly legit aside from the laws they avoided. As in not having violent gangsters or mobsters in their employ or as members. If violence was threatened you'd figure that possibility would come up, it would give them more legal ammunition. And threatening violence means you'd need to also be able to stop them from reporting the threats of violence.
