it's easy to make because it involves zero decisions besides how they'll draw his bangs. you could transplant 90% of slice of life protagonists to another story and lose absolute nothing. if you made a lineup of manga mcs, it would be like looking at the infinitely receding image of oneself in a mirror.

it's not deep or anything but it's pretty good for a "hunter, dungeon, system, modern day" type story. it falls squarely within a genre but introduces something new and interesting in how he trains.

i don't care for the alpha male red pill bullshit rhetoric either, nor am i against herbivore-type male leads. it's just that they're all herbivores in exactly the same way, to the point of being insulting to the audience because every insert character (the guy the reader is supposed to identify with) is a total loser. it begs the question--don't mangakas thus think their readers are losers? so is manga cultivating and nurturing losers? does it want its audience to only read crap where the personality black hole loser mc gets everything they desire with no effort? i see these copy-paste jobs and just think the manga industry is even more cynical about its reader base than i am about manga quality

i read 125 chapters before dropping and he was still awful in ch 125. that's too much to expect a reader to put in when the main character is awful

fair enough. everyone's got their standards. i just get confused when the review doesn't seem to match the score. sometimes i have a bunch of small stuff that bugs me and my reviews are mostly negative to vent about them but i give it a 7; or a story can also have positives that are so good it pushes the negatives to the side.

i was just talking about the manhwa. maybe MC is less insufferable in the novel. manhwa MC is literally the type of character who would throw away excalibur saying "this sword doesn't work"

there is only one japanese romance plot and it's hot girl loves wimpy loser guy for no reason whatsoever. it's not even worth looking at these since they're all carbon copies of one another.

the standards of masculinity are different between cultures. but more to the point, in all these stories, we get the exact same mass produced zero personality insert main character whose only passions in life are white rice, manga, and onsens. when every single japanese MC is exactly the same, i don't see a way to defend even the most mean-spirited "beta male" type comments. oh? is he a shy, modest, black-haired scrawny short guy with self-esteem issues who loves manga and video games, struggles to talk to women, is generically "kind," and has no hobbies whatsoever outside of his anime/manga or office job?

oh i have a great idea for a manga. let's put that character next to a 10/10 pretty girl who likes him for no reason whatsoever. oh and then he can blush and get embarrassed any time she talks. oh and i have another great idea. how about they go to the beach or to a family restaurant or to an onsen or celebrate new years at a fireworks festival? manga has become one giant trope, all stemming from the fact that there is no risk taking in designing male main character personalities.

"mid Overgeared" is redundant since that story is 6/10 at best.

I don't think you can call a manhwa a 7/10 if you have to roleplay as someone with brain damage to enjoy it ("don't overthink it" multiple times in the review). VR, gatcha, asspull OP start, formulaic, illogical plot - these are all things you admit happen in this story. 4/10 is the highest this story can go even if the execution is perfect given what you admit is in this.

this totally agrees with my reading. MC in this is insufferable the entire way through; given what author gives him, he should be way better than he is.

"Don't get attached to characters," the manwha. Every win is earned, usually at great cost. MC does the edgelord smile a bit too much and there's stupid social darwinist philosophy ("most people are lazy mooches on society and thus deserve to die") in the first part of the manwha. It's worth putting up with the negatives for the fights though, which are hype and edge of your seat entertainment. 8.5/10

i know different things bother different people. continuity like you mention wasn't really that important to me and might be more about translation than an actual problem. i had issues with the art going in, but I think the core murim stuff (cultivation, action, MC progression, side characters, antagonists) were all well-executed. i think it's a 9/10 based off positives adding together

this is one of the top 5 murim manwhas and you're saying it's stupid.

Translation sucks from the jump (ch. 1-46), even if the story itself is good. It goes through multiple translation groups so hopefully whenever i get past the Merakiscans translation, it'll get better.

Edit: translation not a problem at least from ch. 30-180. Sucks before this.

I'm the opposite of you, where I'll write ten negatives in the review and give it a 7-8. 95% of your review was positive but you gave it a 6, that's all i was saying. This manhwa is a 6-7 imo.

I've tried 3 or 4 times with this story and I just cannot get into it. MC sucks and I hate VR premises.

I was a little put off by the 8th grade syndrome MC white haired persona, but it turns out his pretentious seriousness and autopilot persistence is way better than any quality the MC has. Real MC is basically the run-of-the-mill whiny type MC, but his 8th grade syndrome awakened self carries him and the comic.
