from my understanding he wasn't trying to tell her he still loves her, he was trying to tell her he really did love her and still cares for her as a person, he was worried about a person he's been close to and knew was in a bad situation, i don't think he's as bad as everyone make him out to be, he's naive, a softy and easily manipulated but wouldn't really say he's "a douchebag" or "trash"

pretty much, he was forced into doing something, failed, disappointed his father who left him and then out of nowhere is forced to live with two seemingly impeccable strangers that fit what his father wanted of him
it's not like he hates them, it's just extremely uncomfortable living with strangers, the inferiority complex and untreated issues don't really help.
what i got out of this is his mother kinda sucks as a parent too, where was she when his father was breaking her son? did she even try to have him know the other 2 before moving in together or was she too busy chasing her own happyness, cause it really does seem like she only cares about him for the "good family" image.
