Isazuki Village is a village with a deep, strong faith in the Inugami folklore. As the opinions of redevelopment of the village are divided among the villagers, they are greeted with the strange deaths of the people from a construction company who had come to investigate the village. Tachibana Tsukiko, who lives in this village, and her three childhood friends are getting ready to participate in the annual festival that seeks to drive away the Inugami spirit. However, they end up getting caught up in a certain incident…?! This dark, young-adult tale of childhood friends begins here…

The first four stories are about the everyday life of a couple living together with their pets.The first one tells the death of an old dog, hence the title. The last one is a bit similar to a later work of the author, Kamigami no Itadaki.

Dog-complex policeman, Miyoshi, was captivated by the popular model, Kanae, who always looks like a stray dog. However, Kanae never paid attention to him, until a day Miyoshi managed to get close to him thanks to an incident. Will the love of these two naïve people be able to go smoothly?

Kaede is still mourning the loss of his brother when he is suddenly reunited with his childhood friend, Noro. As they get closer, Kaede shares his suspicion that he may have caused his brother’s death. After hearing this, Noro recommends animal therapy and lets Kaede use him as a pet dog. But one day, the dog suddenly kisses his owner…?

Inuyashiki has a family, a wife and two kids, none of which care about him. When he learns that he has only three months to live he realizes that the only one who will miss him is his dog. Shortly after this realization he is killed in a crash landing by aliens. He is rebuilt by them as a machine with a human exterior. How will his life change now that he isn't human.

In Japanese mythology an inugami is a type of shikigami, similar to a familiar spirit, resembling, and usually originating from, a dog, and most commonly carrying out vengeance or acting as guardians on behalf of the inugami-mochi, or "inugami owner". Inugami are extremely powerful and capable of existing independently, as well as turning on their "owners" and even possessing humans.

About best friends Yachiyo Inugami and Suzu Nekoyama. Inugami likes cats and has a dog-like personality. Nekoyama likes dogs and has a cat-like personality.
