This series follows the life of Sumito Kayashima. Sumito is a spoiled, wealthy yet lazy young man. Sumito doesn't work. He spends his days going to parties and frivolously spending away his wealth on antiques, books he doesn't intend to read, and other such things. His daily routine and interests are managed by his hired conversationalist/secretary Koizumi.

Sumito seems to be the quite, naive little rich boy but when night comes his innocent mask comes off to reveal a much more conniving and wanton man.

At a Shinto shrine in Shimoda, there is a large rock. It is said that if four close friends gather around the rock and all wish for the same thing, that wish will come true. As four friends, Natsumi, Saki, Yuka and Rinko, gather around the rock like they used to in their childhood, they soon find the rock can indeed grant people's wishes. With only a short amount of time before Saki is due to transfer schools, the girls spend a summer filled with magic.

The first four stories are about the everyday life of a couple living together with their pets.The first one tells the death of an old dog, hence the title. The last one is a bit similar to a later work of the author, Kamigami no Itadaki.

An intimate but well-hidden relationship between a surgeon, Kojima, and his coworker, Mizuochi.

A peek at the life at a Shinto shrine (or jinja). Mostly centered around one Satomi Shinjirou, who's more or less forced to choose the path to priesthood after his older brother skipped out on that. Kind of a love story (there are several of those in it, actually), but it's more about the people who work at a modern-day shrine and the circumstances they have to deal with.

Gyeo-Wul, an art student, is having trouble drawing. One day, she bumps into a handsome guy and takes his notebook by mistake. The notebook had drawings with an art style she is not used to and tries to draw better than him. But, it turns out that the guy knows who she is.

Sayoko was just reading peacefully in her backyard, waiting for her relative Iyahaya Nantomo to arrive, when some homeless kid in a large overcoat suddenly comes in and says he's Iyahaya Nantomo (?) and runs off. The guards catch him and bring him in, but then it's revealed they've made a mistake and technically kidnapped him! So to save face the boy has to pose as Iyahaya Nantomo...or else!
