In a small Nepalese shop, Makoto Fukamachi, photographer for a Japanese expedition to conquer Mt. Everest, stumbles across a camera which may well be that of George Mallory, the celebrated mountain climber who was the first to attempt conquering Everest.
Mallory disappeared along with Andrew Irvine during the course of their ascent in 1924, without leaving any indication of whether they reached the summit or not.
So, what if it was only on their return trip that they had their fatal accident?

During the Interwar Period (1925-1932), Tomoji lives in the Japanese countryside while Fumiaki works as a photographer in Tokyo. One day, they meet... This story is inspired by real characters who founded later a branch of Buddhism.

Through the ordinary small events of his professional and personal life, a forty-year-old man lets himself go on impromptu escapades at random along the paths that the big city offers. This vagrant impulse soon takes on the appearance of a sentimental journey, punctuated by images of the walker's youth.

1967, summer. Kenichi, a 11 years old boy, discovers a magic mountain, thanks to a salamander confined in a museum.

A family is devastated by the Great Tottori Fire of 1952, but the family comes to terms with the disaster and breaks free from the bonds holding them back.

The first four stories are about the everyday life of a couple living together with their pets.The first one tells the death of an old dog, hence the title. The last one is a bit similar to a later work of the author, Kamigami no Itadaki.

To get anything other than the pretty pictures out of this short story, one should have read Natsume Souseki's Sanshiro.

Middle-aged salaryman Hiroshi Nakahara accidentally takes a train ride back to his old hometown to visit his mother’s grave. Then for reasons he can’t explain, Hiroshi is transported back in time, and discovers that he’s an 8th grader again, but with all of his adult memories intact.

Can he, or should he try to change the decisions he made before? But more importantly, can he find his way back to the present day, or is he stuck in the past?
