And I'm pretty sure you're correct that Mr. Desmond is unable, could be for any reason, to express emotions. The older brother seemed similar to him in that regard from what we've seen of him so it might not be actual damage but rather just a flaw in the man himself.

But Ms. Desmond is also likely suffering from more than just paranoia/inferior complex/whatever it'll actually end up being as she's been shown to be very unstable when Anya reads her mind, I don't think this is only caused by her issue with Mr. Desmond.
