because the church clearly has insane power in this universe. most of these series play on medival Europe which was effectively a theocracy in the periods where these are set. it also plays on human nature. "absolute power corrupts absolutely." it just makes sense. But in fairness we (the consumer) love to see the wicked fall from spots of power. as i stated earlier the church has the power and so they gave it the ability to be corrupt as i stated earlier and so we want to see it all fall into the "right" main character. (it being power/influence)
