Problem with many timeskip stories is that they severely underestimate how much can happen within a single year. He wouldn't be trying to escape after hundreds/thousands years. He'd be doing that probably in the span of couple months.

Similar thing with many mangas and manhwas that start with "I've spent 50000 years training in hell, and now I'm finally returning home", when from amount of things that happened there and how little their character has changed, you'd otherwise realistically guess they spent 10 years there at most
