I reckon it's more of a panic move. Is not like the can sit down and compare right and wrongs... but rather, knowning wife and daughter are been hunter, he would go with what would be the most "common" safe route.

If the wife wasn't lost at this point they could've stopped for a second to think what's the best course of action and, as you say, realize leaving her behind might no be that smart.

He might try to hunt them down saying they brought this creature into the world or some shite like that.
After all, he has a vendetta against the husband too.

But I'm willing to bet it'll backfire hard on him.

Whatever "social" message the author was trying to give us, it really was badly timed. You cannot expect the readers to enjoy a stop of the action in a SHOUNEN MANGA during what's supposed to be the FINAL BATTLE.

You have them as the pre-amble or something that's related to how the big shots of the story is related to.
