That glove scene has been the best part of the series so far, so cute

The dreaded Japanese cold, an illness that springs up from being in a mildly chilly environment for a few hours. The vast majority of patients are bedridden for days, and most would die if not for the stunning efficacy of random bullshit administered by the elusive childhood-friend-who-is-also-a-cute-girl.

The manga finally finished, but the ending was simply poor. I’m not sure of the exact details, but it seem highly likely that the manga was either axed or publishers decided it was ending whether the story was ready or not. There was not enough time spent properly wrapping up all of the various plot lines, so several important characters are left to the wayside to make room for the very final battle. The majority of the manga is 7-9/10 for art, characters, story but the last 10-20 chapters tank down to 3-5/10. There was obviously a lot of care and effort early in the story to make sure everything “made sense,” in regards to the differing factions’ abilities, desires, and goals, but that care was lost during the final arc. The entire terrorism plot in Ginza is absolutely ridiculous, and it makes no sense why the JSDF cannot act whenever SWARMS OF EXPLOSIVE DRONES ARE RELEASED IN A CIVILIAN CENTER, especially whenever comparing the opening battle at Ginza to this terrorism shitshow. And then the story says, “we need to blow up a wall in our star fortress because it somehow turned into a magic circle that can open a new gate to a world of man eating aliens.” Why does the gate work this way? Why are concrete walls that are simply built nearby the old gate capable of being used as a conduit for interdimensional travel?

So overall, GATE is a good read but the ending is executed so horrifically that I just have a sour taste in my mouth thinking about how all of everyone’s efforts let to THAT.

6/10 with its main draw being the fact that it’s complete, so you don’t have to wait for chapters. Most characters are very one dimensional, with one quirk to separate them from the rest. The worst offenders are the villains who are all basically the same character, overly confident and easily provoked buffoons.

Earlier in the story, fight scenes weren’t amazing, but you could at least understand what was going on, and the characters involved were using actual tactics. Later in the story, after way to much power scaling, every fight turned into a light show with dust and debris everywhere where it is impossible to tell what is going on or who has the upper hand. Character A uses Magic/Sword attack, blowing up terrain, buildings, and Character B. Then Character B emerges from the dust without a single scratch and retaliates with the same destructive power. What ensues is a back and forth light show where nothing is happening until the artist presumably gets burnt out and abruptly ends the fight.

The story itself is OK, but it relies too heavily on dramatic irony and its reverse counterpart, which just creates a lot of artificial suspense where you basically are always out of the loop. The payoff is rarely grand enough to warrant the usage, and after seeing it so many times, it’s like the characters are pulling solutions out of their ass.

Why was he hesitating? Did he miss the giant “ENTERING SHADOW WORLD” prompt? It’s a fake world, their “happiness” is completely fabricated, as is the rest of the world.

Is Adjest’s fight finally over? It certainly overstayed its welcome. Just endless light shows with no results for chapters on end.

Finally the big reveal, although it was exactly what I thought it would be.

It’s getting to the point where I wonder if the translation team has even a single person who speaks English, or if they’re just using Google Translate.

Chapter 175, it’s better because the newer antagonists are actually capable, but they still just talk way too much. Maybe it’s just personal preference, but the one or two antagonists that actually stay silent are more interesting.

It would’ve been better if the homunculus didn’t start monologuing like literally every other antagonist, but I guess the author just couldn’t help himself.

Hesitating to kill an enemy in the shadow world, where everything is little more than an illusion, simply makes no sense.

I’m up to chapter 44 and so far, every single antagonist is the exact same character: infinite confidence with little to no competence, coupled with an obsession with not being looked down upon, and anger issues that lead to lots of screaming and shouting.

Why was Kraiken so certain that Desir was a tier 1 mage? Literally what prompted that thought?

Infinite confidence backed by complete incompetence, a stale old trope this author heavily relies upon. Getting angry, overflowing with spittle and drool, because someone thinks one is better than you and charging into battle without a plan, then followed by being instantly defeated. Is there no one who is confident for any reason other than plot-required pride?
