Yeah, I feel like a lot of stories in this genre do so to appeal to the fangirls/guys by making the love interests legal adults. It probably isn't the case for all of them but it would be hard to say that wasn't a factor (and in some stories it's a lot more obvious than others lol). I personally don't fit into that category, I just wish the best for the character's relationships so the age isn't a big deal in that regard.
