You’re all good, dude! I get what you’re talking about. I’ll try and address your points (hopefully in order) as someone educated in the methodology of biblical interpretation.

For your point on preservation:
The Bible is immaculately preserved. We have been able to reconstruct what the original copies of the Bible contained, thanks to archaeological discoveries during this century and the last. As it turns out, the monks who maintained the scripture in its original language, from the beginning of the church to even after the Gutenberg press, did a wonderful job. Over the course of 2,000 years, the number of errors in the Bible that changed the meaning of a verse total 0.

For your point on Interpretation:
We can’t interpret the Bible in any way convenient to us, because we risk warping the intended meaning. Each book of the Bible was written for a certain people, at a certain time, in a certain place, facing a certain problem. We can glean proper meaning from this if we keep that in mind. However, if we stray into personal interpretation, you begin perverting the word into something it isn’t.

Take American slavery for instance. Slave owners used the Bible to justify it, but if you read what it actually says about slavery, you’ll find that it condemns every aspect of it. The Bible talks about indentured servitude, and sets guidelines for how people should behave in systems where it exists, but wholly condemns our modern understanding of slavery.

This is why we can’t just interpret the Bible in different ways. It never ends well.

Usually when you’re basing your story off of something, you research it/have respect for the source material. Religious status has little to do with that. The author of this manga seems to actively despise its source material, and made no effort to accurately critique or represent it.
