This is an unfortunately common trope in eastern fiction right now. It stems from the Nietzscheian idea of the “Übermensch.” The gist of it is that man’s enlightenment killed the idea of God, therefore destroying the moral framework we exist in (the story Nietzsche wrote about this is where we get the phrase “God is dead, and we have killed him”). In order to avoid a societal collapse, Nietzsche proposed that man must psychologically evolve into the Übermensch, an ‘over man’ who creates his own values and becomes his own god. This idea has flooded eastern media, and basically all shonen protags are made to be Übermensch. That’s one of the reasons why God and the church is evil in every shonen known to man, and why almost all JRPG’s end with you fighting God.

I kind of agree, but too much freedom in writing leads to formless, boring stories. Limitations are what allow for creativity in the first place. I enjoy inspired works; the problem with this story is that it only works if you haven’t read the Bible. That’s antithetical to the purpose of an inspired work.

Imagine if Milton hadn’t read the Bible before writing “Paradise Lost,” and instead based it on his loose idea of the Bible. I doubt his book would have been influential if he took that approach. His story works because he understood the source material. This one does not work, because the author has a less than surface level understanding of it. That’s just my opinion anyway.

I understand where you’re coming from. The setting is very mundane, and the characters start out with a very realistic apathy to them. But over the course of the series, you see every single character that struggles with this apathy grow out of it. They figure out goals for their lives, forgive themselves for past mistakes, fall in love, and reject the notion that living in mundane circumstances means your effort doesn’t matter. They strive to better themselves and the people around them, improving their environment. How can that not be a heartwarming story?

It’s how he responds to the situation. It shows how much more confident and assured he’s become, all because of his blossoming relationship with the fmc. They have slowly, but surely, beat sense into each other over the course of the story. Also, what part of this chapter screamed self-loathing to you? The mc is actually in a really good headspace here.

“Ugghhh, I hate moments that show how far the main character has come… please don’t show me character development in the manga about two characters developing into better people, that would be so lame.”
