I believe he was important because of his psychic ability to enter into the minds of people and monsters to gather info. Because of that, he was considered very necessary to the fight against the dragons since he was the only one who could gather info of their plans firsthand.

And yeah, that's definitely an unexpectedly effective way I've seen a character with regeneration abilities break out of mind control. Very unique. Props to the writer.
