I'mma be honest, this series has kind of always been the "bounce between two radically different tones and vibes" type of series so I didn't even register the magical girl thing as odd.

It is rare when those two traits overlap, because often the main girl in a series that they set up at the start is kind of boring(well not boring per se more so bland average nice girl with no other actual discernible traits other than "nice to everyone" and "pretty") and then better options come in throughout the series and you just get bummed because you know damn well the author's just going to pick that default one at the end anyways.
