Why is it so many Japanese things I've read that takes place in the regular world always plays foreigners as either "as racist and xenophobic as the Japanese are on average" or "kind-hearted but stupid", with the occasional "greedy as hell" are tourists in Japan shitty to them that often?

As an aside if I had to give a sword the ultimate weapon category it would probably be either a claymore or scimitar, or machete if you would count it as one though I think that's more of a blade than a sword. And if it's a melee weapon in general it's got to be the spear - the common man's weapon, with ridiculous piercing force, good range control, good weight for a good smash if necessary and easily usable by amateurs and outright oppressive when used by professionals.

While the low quality metals was one factor the other factor is that the shape often doesn't have room for good dispersal of force if it does hit at certain angles so even when it's made out of good quality metal it may just crack or chip unexpectedly which granted, things like claymore's do that too, but most western swords due to the fact that they just had a lot of metal were made in such a way that even if the edge was a little dull chipped or damaged you could still do a lot of damage with just the weight of it and it's solid center Mass, not as much the case with katanas - one chip becomes two chips becomes a crack becomes a shattered blade.
