It's exactly this, atleast that was the case in the webnovel. Grandfel couldn't ever assert an 'opinion' because he didn't exist outside of the traits he brought from being synchronized with Lee Hoyeol. But his discipline is so strong that anything lee hoyeol did had to be in a way that fit with his image. What the manhwa did by showing Grandfel inside Lee hoyeol's mind during the exorcism ritual with Demon King Decarabia(forgot spelling) was their own original spin to it, Hoyeol's own mind image (of himself) was supposed to be Grandfel, and grandfel would have scared that guy shitless until he tried to escape, then fail.Grandfell was an image create by hoyeol which I think very late in the story will take full control of the body , but will fail after some time . -reddit
