I’m not saying it’s not irrational and present in the real world. The way this story explained what the antagonists want, makes no sense. They just want constant fighting until their group is left but then they will turn on each other. The ones you used want more subjugation than outright murder.

That whole kill the weak till only the strong are left has no real game plan for the future. Ok so you killed all the weak people,, how’s your country gonna run?
