The mice in a paradise refers to an experiment where mice were put into a mice Paradise, where there is food and water, everything needed. Those mice flourish at first, however, they eventually all die because of overpopulation. it is an interesting comparison to humanity that Oliver used.

So it's not that the Takaidzu village was oppressed by the Fujiyoshi village but the opposite. When the Takaidzu tried to kill all of the Fujiyoshi during a famine, the Fujiyoshi fought back and a bunch of Takaidzu were killed. After sacrificing all of the people in Fujiyoshi (this time for real), the people of Takaidzu changed the story so that they were the ones who were oppressed but managed to kill the oppressors.
