One Piece is a master class in storytelling and themes, full of fun characters written with such heart that will take you from howling laughter to finding yourself in a pool of your own tears, relationships and commentary on the state of the world that will make you consider the life youâve lived, quotable writing that leaves you with long-lasting impressions, a world so rich and complex and yet is so utterly simple at heart that anyone from a 12-year-old boy, to a power scaling brain-rotted shĆnen junkie, to a grandfather looking for his next book to close out his nights with. This all may be a *bit* too far for some fans of the series, but to me, there is absolutely no question why itâs the best-selling comic of all time.
1000+ chapters may seem daunting, but despite what some may think, One Piece is not a story you read to catch up on, One Piece is a manga you read to ENJOY. (Almost) Every second of the Manga will have you so captivated, that by the point you realize youâve caught up to those 1000+ chapters, youâll be upset there wasnât any more. At least, thatâs how it was for me. Iâm leaving out a lot of details purposefully and though partly thatâs because I could never do it justice, itâs also because I believe itâs best enjoyed only with vague impressions. Itâs a story unlike any other shĆnen, every second so clearly thoughtful, full of the heart and passion of Eiichiro Oda. If I wasnât put off by the fanbase, I would have started it long ago.
If youâre someone who finds yourself enriched by novels more than Manga, One Piece may just be what youâre looking for, despite the childish impressions it may give off. Itâs a story for everyone, a story about sailing the high seas, adventure, family, political drama, relationships, hardship, freedom, and so much more. Tonally, itâs no Berserk or Vagabond, but Iâd be lying if I said One Pieceâs writing didnât manage to stir the same emotions out of me. If youâre thinking about starting One Piece, all you have to do is click on that first chapter, and open your heart to freedom.
