Not that I have read either, but did you perhaps read the web novel instead of the light novel? (typically manga follows light novels)

Was scrolling so fast at the end there that I mistook "Original - Emperor Penguin" for "Go watch the Penguin"

Not as enjoyable to read in small portions...

The whole "I'm trying to be a bad guy, but all my actions make me a good guy" trope is hard to pull off well.
I think I have only really liked it in "I'm the Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire!"
