Obviously, it's better to ambush when it's nearing it's end. The reason I said that is because he wanted to only fight when they got closer to him. Plus most of his army is pretty fucking good with offense. His little insects for info and then his lizardmen has the necessary equipments, mounts as well as some of them having good aoe attack, if you wanna count the automation castle then yes he would be better defensively but thats the case for most of them. It's usually easier to fight, hiding behind a fortress than it is to attack
