Well it more of a thing in western media these days to force lgbt stuff into everything even at the expense of the story and reconning established cannon events but in eastern media lgbt stuff is actually pretty common, its just that when they translate it for western audiences, they omit certain connotations. The Japanese are especially open about sexuality as their culture and history are rooted in people being true to themselves.(there's a whole video on that on youtube) Even before 2008 there are a lot of Japanese media focused on girl on girl and guy on guy relationships and its natural for minor characters and side characters like Ryu here to be gay in a boy-girl ralationship focused story
Though I do agree that these days certain translators forcibly change the meaning and wording and ruining the actual story for their own agenda.
