I bet the blessing of the king has a subjects buff the king type of thing. So the more his subjects believe in him the stronger he is.

I know the over taxation thing used to be big in Japanese history. They had some shogun who over taxed his area and it went to shit when neighboring areas flourished and he was used as a bad example, but they're also digging into European history to give everyone a chance to show how crap/great they used to be.
