From Esthétique: During the period when the Tang Dynasty was at its peak of success, imperial court general, Huangfu Duanhua, was whisked away into a series of bizarre and supernatural events after his friend accidentally stepped into a store owned by a Persian merchant. This then led to many incidents that were kept sealed by the empire for a thousand years… Court disputes, strife in the royal family… As the wheels of the perilous history are set in motion, where will they lead?

This series, a joint project between the rising star Nakamura Asumiko and renowned director of Shoujo Kakumei Utena Ikuhara Kunihiko, weaves a strange, surreal, and often dark comedy respendent with ruffles and lace. It is on the surface a farce about a young girl traveling with her lover, some sort of bear-type creature, but as to be expected of Ikuhara it's multi-layered.

The series is being endorsed by Baby the Stars Shine Bright, the leading name in Japanese lolita fashion, and the characters often wear clothes based off of those from the company.

Love comedy depicting “the great me (ore-sama)” that falls in love for the first time and the agony of a timid high-school girl is Zetsubou Baby. Our heroine, Kasumi, who don’t even have friends let alone boyfriend, is suddenly being told to “become my woman” by this elite man of men. Kasumi is very scared in the beginning, but little by little her heart begin to change by the daring moves of this man.

Kouji and Izumi are still playing one step forward, two steps back in their angst-ridden dance of love. The drama is taken to new heights in this series: just how far will Kouji go in his desperate love for Izumi? Will these two ever be together and be happy at the same time?

Note - Volumes 1-14 have been completely translated into English. However, several years after the supposed finale, the mangaka published 3 more chapters (recently compiled into a 15th volume) which act as an epilogue for the series, though the 14th volume had a conclusion of sorts in itself. Even though Yue is forbidden from ever leaving the temple, they sneak into town, not realising what they've set into motion.
