its not mercy or making friends w/ sukuna, this is probably more for Itadori himself. He doesn't want to be a heartless murderer like sukuna and others. part of Yuji still wants to hold onto his own "humanity" that's been forcibly withered away throughout the series. He'd rather ensure he saves fushiguro's body and somehow quarantine or seal sukuna rather than just annihilate his consciousness (we've seen this a thousand times in other japanese media)
