to kill the cat? the existence of dark spirits must have an equal power with light apirits, so for the church that's solely based on light spirits to rein total control of people and its believers they need to remove any competion, or they pissed the dark spirit king (if there's a spirit king for each element dark is also included). Also maybe the reason the cat doesn't have special power is because the church is killing its kind making the resonating power weak? (maybe the more spirits there are, the stronger that spirit type will be) or i'm just looking too deep into things here lol

honestly it's more of that single person or group in a larger community that's being bad, religions in general aren't bad at all, they usually give people hope at fighting what seem to be the impossible, but there are also people that uses that fact to gain power, money, etc. Like you said more often than not in a fantasy story the church/religion is actually just a bunch of greedy people gathered together, but on the reality side, not everyone in a religion is bad, there are a lot of good people too, just be aware of things in general to pick the good and bad people in your life
