I think you underestimate how important specializing in genetics is, several food industries are looking to pump out the best crops to make the best food and while they may specialize in insect biology they'd still have all the knowledge of a regular biologist and geneticist

Don't forget you have to take core courses (they said those three are electives) and combat is pretty good no matter where you use it
