Utsugi is an investigator working for a detective agency. An abused kid and his mom decide to skip town one night in order to escape the loan sharks hounding them over the father's debt. After his mother dies, the boy decides to exact revenge on the people who were responsible.

Roots of A is essentially a short manga featuring Akiyama during his senior year of college. In it, Akiyama and four of his classmates are taking a criminal psychology course and given an assignment where they must construct a profile of a person based on a letter they sent. This outcome of the assignment, plus what the professor says afterwards, is what prompts Akiyama to enter grad-school and continue to study psychology.

The main character's name, "Kitty 101", was given to her by a scientist named Troll. Kitty 101 was biologically created by combining several strings of DNA with man-made DNA. She was also given an XY chromosome which turns her into a male on a regular basis.

When she was a baby, Kitty 101 was stolen by one of Troll's scientists, Jason Haven, who wanted to save her from the experiments. He named her Mars Haven and brought her up as his own daughter because she reminded him of his lost daughter.

Time passes, and Troll proceeds with his experiments on the ESPs under his disposal.
