Hmm. Personally, I don't think you are completely right about that. In my opinion, they messed up the duel against the vice captain not because of the animation or the effects they used, instead because of how much content they cutted from the original content: the flashbacks of the first student in which she explains her reasons for joining the knights of Liberion and get to a high enough position to make Beryll an instructor so he and his swordsmanship can be recognized, I especially liked the panel when she says “Is finally time for sensei's swordmanship to see the light of day” ; the explanation of Beryll skills centered on his keen observation skills and insight; and finally the monologe change from the vice captain point of view to Beryll's of the way it originally was in the manga (I don't if it was that way in the Light Novel as I haven’t read it yet).

The things I really liked about the first chapter are: the voice actor choices and performance, the style of the anime overall (though I'm still not used to the battle scenes which incorporate 3D), and the opening theme.

On another point, I find it a little sad that you mention Guundam as an example to look down on the tastes of other people when they maybe just didn’t like how they adapted the manga, which, by the way, is completely valid. Categorizing others as "noobs" only seems like an excuse to look down on others and anime genres that you personally dislike.
