Just my understanding on it, but apparently his problem isn't that he can't USE skills and mana, it's that he can't generate the mana himself to use them. That god was using his power to flood the area with magic particles, which is what was causing the trouble the others had, and was why MC was the only one standing; he didn't normally absorb or generate magic in the first place.

The explanation is that, in time of desperation, he does know how to forcibly absorb the mana around him. The issue is that for it to be useful, he'd need to absorb huge amounts, and it would only allow a short burst of healing, power, and skill-use. I'd say it was foreshadowed in a few places, but the conditions are rare enough that it also makes sense that we haven't seen it before. Basically, it means he has a failsafe when confronted with things like that renegade god, but isn't something we would normally see in lesser situations.

Not the worst deus ex machina situation I've seen. Could have used a bit more/better foreshadowing, but not bad.
