      My DnD group had a second Antagolist that was literally death trying to kill us for cheating death way too many times and getting away with it. But instead he got traumatized by our antics and trying new ways to cheat death, like while he was trying to convince a demi-god to let to of his immortality. just for our elf mage to pop in the death realm, say "ayo, imagine dying" and reincarnating on his cloned body.

        To answer your original comment, I believe the boatman is Charon, he is the one that takes the souls over the Styx river. In the ancient greek times they used to burry their dead with a coin in the mouth to pay his fare.
        That's the one I know of, maybe there are others.
        So he doesn't collect the souls like the grim reaper, just gave them a ride over a river.
