I see it as sink or swim test. It was never to get the best or the most number of first class mages. What they want are the survivors.

See my other posts, I've already covered this. To recap, killing others, "weeding out the weak" doesn't make others stronger, and such a system can cause the weak, cowardly and unwilling to protect to float to the top over the dead bodies of strong and courage protectors. Also weaker inexperienced people can become stronger and experienced, ESPECIALLY MAGES, but not if they are dead. So even if you care nothing for lives at all, such a stupid system is counterproductive.

Huh, it came back. Still hoping it won't turn into a harem, just give another girl to Demon Lord girl, ya know ?
back in the day people did not arrive unannounced, the very act would have been considered very rude and scandalous, the palace was notified in advanced that the duke would be coming, giving them enough time to prepare for his arrival, as is the point of announcing them ahead of time.
Yep. It's really the typically the author's storytelling. They always presented perspective of almost all characters, so we could judge it by ourselves. Regardless something is good or not.
Chapter 8: School Trip - Ijimeru Aitsu ga Waruinoka, Ijimerareta Boku ga Waruinoka? · 2021-03-03T08:57:44Z
My definition of "fair" is to have the same opportunities as everyone else.
You are all over the place. What does having the same opportunity as everyone else, have to do with testing peoples personality/character as well?
How does not letting examinees die change anything regarding opportunities? I am not saying to pass the people who are saved from death, flunk them if they need to be saved, duh.
I do agree that killing them off would mean less, but that wouldn't matter if there are stronger mages to make up for that lost.
Nonsense.
1. some people dying doesn't make other people stronger.
2. Strong people, and potentially strong people can die with such a system, meaning not only less people, but weaker people too. Especially as people learn best by failure, no one can afford to fail in such a stupid system thus they can not properly learn and even in terms of raw power, you have less of it.
Also, let's say for a moment that your ludicrous statement that some people dying make others grow stronger and thus compensate for the weaker people dying was true (which it is not). The idea of labeling strong mage is so they can defend everyone else, say from the next demon invasion.
Let's say you got two individuals.
Person A with amazing talent, growing stronger day by day. They are courageous and dedicated to protecting the people and don't even ask much in return.
Person B with mediocre talents, they've been around longer and know how to avoid dangerous monsters, and they mostly do avoid dangerous monsters.
B is underhanded and cowardly, only caring about enriching themselves. Has found a talent in poisoning and other sneaky assassination methods and takes assassin jobs here and there. If given a request to help battle a demon invasion, they are probably going to kill the person offering the task and run away with the reward instead.
A & B are thrown into the worlds stupidest mage test grounds AKA the test shown in this story. Person A catches a bird really quickly with amazing skill. Person B congratulates them and sites around a campfire to eat a meal with them, thus person A mysteriously dies of poison. B hands in the bird and becomes a grade 1 mage (or whatever the title)
How is anyone better off that A is dead and B is a grade 1 mage? How does A dying make B stronger and better capable and willing to defend people?
Personally if I were to run such a test, I would save A from death with examiners hidden around observing people, and disqualify B for attempted murder. But that is somehow naive of me according to you? How? I say trusting the mediocre talent murderous cowardly mage over the strong one with good potential, courage and morals is what is "naive" and stupid.

Yup couldn't agree with you more! Isekai has such massive potential for being a killer genre its honestly baffling how its stifled in the Japanese mangas and animes.
