But I would believe in your comment more if he were to exclaim something like, "Why are there ogres here?!," for me to believe this part of the story changed at least. The only way his lack of vigilance would make sense is if it explains in the next chapter that, according to his knowledge, there are not supposed to be ogres here. Or that (if he knew there are supposed to be ogres) he knows that the students have the capabilities of at least surviving an attack and that was why he was being nonchalant about them being on the island (the cause of his panic was because they were being ambushed).
