iirc, the real person from whom the robin hood mythos evolved from was the son of a noble, who fled society after drunkenly killing someone important. He stole from the rich because they were the fat, juicy targets, not from any nobleness in his heart. The poor had a love-hate relationship with him since on one hand he was making the wealthy hurt, but also he wasn't above screwing over the poor.
