That's a heavily-naive outlook. In any case, the options are there. The issue remains that the author is either too new or too jaded to take the tougher road.

And that has what to do with anything? Even if his mind isn't keen, he still has one. If he can't think in large scale, he has allies to advise him. That's why I said with his potential—there is a wide range of actions he could take, and the so-called difficulty he's having with his situation can be trivialized with or without assassination. Hell, the next few chapters show just that: He's promoted to B rank for OHKOing a pack of wolves that would rip through even unprepared veteran adventurers, then makes his earlier struggles training against that wolf boy absolutely trivial by using his shadow hax.

He has the potential to completely dominate his enemies to a man. It's just that the author's fixated on keeping him an absolute boy scout, despite the world's rather harsh difficulty setting.

They're not dumb, it's just the MC is untested and determined to be a goody goody. Which results in the suggestions of kidnapping and assassination not work only because MC wouldn't stomach it.

Think carefully. His shadow magic lets him go anywhere, and the author's demonstrated clearly he can move about uncontested and undetected. It's nothing for someone of his potential to kill the entire royal bloodline and sink the whole of the nation into chaos without bothering even one knight. But very clearly, the author doesn't want to court anything darker than alluding the princess is a cutthroat and the royal family are self-absorbed slobs. The result has been this slow slog of a rescue mission.

A more competent author would have long-since challenged MC's ideas of virtue and justice with just the hard reality of a world that lives & dies by the sword.

It isn't. It's just that the author & editor are pointedly not throwing actual difficulties in the story, and the chapters have been more or less stalling for time.

This has become excessively stupid and unfocused. Whole chapters have been wasted on empty exposition not really relevant to the story—the pacing with its lack of any kind of growth is also a hinder. I'm assuming this is this author's first work.

If they act in logic, they can't drag out the chapters. Besides, apparently that will turn the kingdom on the slaves. Or some shit.

You're absolutely right in that it's a terrible device and a poorly-thought out plot section.

This made it 8 volumes...

I owe a sincere apology to Stephanie Meyer.

"Because of my narrowmindedness of not trusting others, she got killed—!"

You mean the exact others who stood indifferent while you were bullied? While others were bullied? Gonna need the writer to stop pretending MC's any kinds of noble. The introduction chapter was him preparing a Murder One charge in response to bullying.

That young boy who merely didn't want to see people cry, saw crying faces three times a day forever.
