The overly complicated plot is a part on the author.
However, you're still using our own worlds common sense for your reasoning. If in their world this plot ISNT overly complicated and perfectly normal, then wouldn't it be justified by their standards?

The fantastic 5 have nothing to do with them either. As far as the 5 are concerned they're leveling up their status' and are going to fight stronger demons as they progress.
Why agree to the foolhardy of jumping directly into hell to fight the source of monsters.
Even the strongest of parties have hardly been capable of outright defeating anything and everything otherwise this would have been done already no?
Although in a story like this, politics is probably the reason for anything not progressing as planned.

Because going into hell is a problem in of it's self. Monsters are a necessary evil because without them, the only monsters left are the adventurers, of which are absurdly stronger than the average civilian and their powers and skills which don't discriminate politician from criminal.

We all know MC is gonna be pulled into fighting again. The question is, what is going to pull him in?
My theory? The dragon group will come out of the island and attempt to save the people, while doing this MC will be attempting a normal life but will be unable to adjust and become a merc of some sort. Dragon group will need saving and MC happens to be in the city and thus we get our reunion. However, will MC ascend to godhood?
