Its a chance. He could still turn evil from outside influences if just 1 person running away was enough to turn him evil. Real mc could have ended up in hospital and needed to pay debts and lamented his life or something. He kept the mask due to a facial scar after all.

Now I kind of want to see a spinoff of the "past events". First 30 would be all about a shitty life when it gets worse and worse until he sneak attacks a debtor and gains enlightenment by stealing the constellation. Then, with the realization he can gain power in a twisted world where its dog eat dog, he fights his distorted brain until he eventually loses himself and the massacre begins.
