There are plenty of reason to believe him at that point of time, and you gave nothing to believe otherwise. Naive mean trusting in someone without anything to base on, mc has strong reason to trust in him. Unless there any evidence that says otherwise, there is no reason be distrustful of him, which unfortunately mc at that time haven't discover, which is understandable because the villain boss probably already covered any evidence pointing at him.

The paladin lady is distrustful because the villain boss is a stranger to her. So he reaction is natural. And even so she didn't suspect him to be villain at all despite that.
