He was dirt poor and had only himself to offer to her. Which sound like the good ending of a romcom, but in ye olde times this was worth nothing.
In his mind she had a choice between love and having a good life.(good life means having clothes, being well fed and generally content, something love doesn't do) He didn't know the good life included the lowest kind of dipshit as a husband.
I feel for him. He made a hard choice and found out it was the wrong one.
