Sometimes the point is avoiding a break while author thinks and imagines how the story will continue. Most basic plots like this are done in between main plot a a way to keep publishing ( cause of money or avoiding losing fans because of hiatus) while authors come up with new ideas for main plot

There is no impersonation, old man in the prison was the master (previous head of the sect/clan). The bad guy (mu ak) captured him in the past and imprisoned him. Then he told every one his master was dead, becoming the sect leader , and after all that he became the líder of the group ( forgot the name , something with lion?) and after alliance leader.
The confusion must be that at some point he was one of the most righteous people and something happened that made him change completly (didn’t show what happend ).
