I don't blame you for not liking the guy but at the same time everyone got their baggage and everyone reacts to it differently. If everyone could automatically understand each other and feel the same pain as others our relationships as humans would be flawless, but life is not like that. He is most definitely not without blame, and yeah he could have reacted differently, but the way he reacted to his own circumstances is not something we can understand easily. (Don't hate on me for this post just trying to put my thoughts out there.) Hopefully this makes sense, feel free to call me out on anything. (I'll try to respond)

I said the whole situation, like how he had to make the really mature decision of giving up on his dreams of the future for stability in the present. Also, you'd be surprised at the amount of people that are still affected by childhood events such as this one. She looks as if she likes the dude so this amount of overreaction is definitely plausible. Lastly, it's definitely a way for the author to add a bit of a roadblock for the MC and his colleague to overcome and eventually become closer in their relationship and/or better at making their manga.
