Dude the only thing that changed in the relationship is she stopped doing her part. He never did his part to begin with, and so of course he'd notice when the supposed 50% effort that was actually 100% effort just stopped one day. And even though he may not be malicious, it is true that he didn't care for her in any shape or form. He ignored her everywhere and embarrassed her in front of everyone.
