I get that for many people, these after-the-fact tragic backstories are uncomfortable or unwanted, but I think it's important and interesting to think about how we would feel if the story had started with Donald being bullied and his mom dying, and he was the main character. I think most of us would have been rooting for him the whole way and saying "I love merciless mcs." Good stories have antagonists you can root for.
